Williams D. Ford Federal Direct Student Loan (DIRECT LOAN)

Loans may be available to you as part of your financial aid awards to help fund your education.  Remember: A loan is money that must be repaid and may accrue interest.  You should only borrow what is necessary to help you with your education.  Be sure you understand the terms and conditions of your loan if you decide to borrow.

In partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, Northwest Florida State College is taking steps to help students reduce student loan debt.  Like many institutions, we have noticed our students' increased borrowing. Given our low tuition costs, we find this trend to be very concerning.  We do not want our students to be overly burdened with loan debt when they graduate.

There are a number of resources available to help you with the student loan process. The U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid Office has two websites that should answer most of your questions - https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/loans and https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action . You can also contact your campus Financial Aid Office for assistance or more information on any of the topics on this website.

The following steps outline the process of requesting a Federal Direct Loan and receiving loan funds at Northwest Florida State College.

The Direct Loan Application Process: Step 2 Completing an Entrance Counseling Session

First time borrowers who want to apply for a William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan at NWF State College must complete an Entrance Counseling session.

The entrance counseling requirement for the Federal Direct Loan program needs to be completed just once while in attendance at NWF State College; therefore, students who borrow in subsequent years need not repeat the entrance counseling requirement.

At NWF State College, students may complete the entrance counseling requirement online. Students should read all information provided on the entrance counseling web site before proceeding to take the online quiz. The quiz is intended to measure your comprehension of the entrance counseling materials so that you have a clear understanding of the loan and subsequent repayment process.

The Office of Financial Aid must have proof that a student has completed the entrance counseling requirement before the student's loan request can be submitted for processing.

Important: When you get to the section of the Entrance Counseling Session that asks for Selected Schools, you must type in Northwest Florida State College to proceed.

The Direct Loan Application Process: Step 3 Completing the Master Promissory Note (MPN)

Students who are borrowing for the first time through the Federal Direct Stafford Loan for subsidized and unsubsidized loans, the Undergraduate Plus Loan Program must complete a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note in order to receive their Direct Loan funds. Once you complete the MPN, you will not have to complete another MPN for TEN CONSECUTIVE  YEARS.

What To Have On Hand When Completing the Electronic MPN online:

  • *FSA ID - Create a New FSA ID
  • Your social security number
  • Permanent addresses and telephone numbers to complete references
  • Driver license number (if applicable)

* As of May 10, 2015 you must have a verified FSA ID (Username & Password) instead of a PIN to log in to StudentLoans.gov. For assistance call: 1-800-557-7394.  FSA ID Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How to complete the Electronic MPN:

We encourage you to complete the MPN online https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action in order to receive your Direct Loan funds in a timely manner. When you complete the MPN online, you will receive a confirmation number, verifying that the federal government (the lender) has received and accepted your MPN instantaneously. If you request that a paper copy of the MPN be sent to you for completion, there are more steps involved in approving and disbursing your Direct Loan, possibly causing delays in receiving your funds.

Direct Loan Application Process: Step 4 Completing the Loan Request Form

In addition to filing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), students who want to borrow funds through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program must complete the Direct Loan Request form available at the Financial Aid Office located on the Niceville campus.

The Federal Direct Loan Servicing website can be found at:
https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action

More information about Direct Loans from the federal government can be found at:

The Financial Aid Office can only originate loans for a student after the student has submitted the Direct Loan Request Application and registered for classes, since the number of credits registered for determines the amount of the approved loan. Disbursement of Federal Direct Loan funds at NWF State College are by a check, mailed to the student from the Business Office.  Unfortunately, direct deposit is not available.

Please note that if you have an outstanding financial obligation due to NWF State College, the Business Office will deduct the amount of these charges from your loan fund before the loan is disbursed to you.

Questions

How do I request a Federal Direct Loan at NWF State College?

See Step 4 on completing the Direct Loan Request Form.

Do I have to wait until my loan request is approved, and a Direct Loan is originated by the Office of Financial Aid at NWF State College, before completing my Electronic MPN?

No. You can complete the Electronic MPN as soon as you decide that you want to borrow a Federal Direct Loan. The most common delay in the delivery of Federal Direct Loan funds is not signing the MPN on time. Completing the Electronic MPN early will help prevent a delay in the delivery of your loan funds.
