The Flying Needles Quilt Guild gained eleven new honorary members this week, all of them juniors at the Collegiate High School of Northwest Florida State College. The students participated in "Quick Quilts for Kids" a workshop presented by members of the Guild as part of a mini-semester educational experience offered at the end of the school year.
Five members of the Flying Needles Quilt Guild spent the week working with a group of Collegiate students and the experienced quilters were impressed with the dedication of the novice quilters. "We only had 11 students in the class, but they managed to complete 15 quilts in just 6 days," said Sharon Jacobs, guild member and one of the course leaders. She noted that such projects are offered to encourage and promote the art of sewing and quilting to a new generation of potential quilters. The completed quilts will be donated to various local children's charities and youth endeavors.
As a parting gift, the Flying Needles Quilt Guild members presented each student with handmade tote bags and made them honorary members of the Guild. The Flying Needles Quilt Guild has approximately 100 members and those who led the Collegiate High School class included Emily Jacobs, Sharon Jacobs, and Kim Colpitts of Niceville, Ruth Johnson of Freeport, and Nancy Kramer of Bluewater Bay.
The Flying Needles Quilt Guild participates in a variety of charity work including Quilts of Valor, with national distribution to every warrior wounded in the service of our country, and supplying handmade items for the Children's Advocacy Center, Shelter House, Children in Crisis, Sharing and Caring and various shelters in Okaloosa County. Last year the group made 24 Quilts of Valor for wounded warriors and over 900 Christmas stockings for children. The Guild meets every second Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Niceville Church of Christ, across the street from Niceville High School. Visitors and quilters are welcome to attend.
