“Proof” Auditions August 27 for Tony Award Winning Drama

Northwest Florida State College is pleased to announce open auditions for the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play, Proof by David Auburn, on Monday, August 27 in the Sprint Theater of the Mattie Kelly Arts Center on the Niceville campus. Sign-in begins at 6:00 p.m. and auditions start at 6:30 p.m.
The intriguing drama, which was also made into a 2005 film starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins, will be presented by the college from October 17 to 20 and will be directed by Clint Mahle, NWFSC theatre instructor. Those auditioning are asked to prepare a one minute monologue available through e-mail from the director at mahlej@nwfsc.edu, or on the Mattie Kelly Arts Center website at www.mattiekellyartscenter.org, or provided at the audition. Proof, tells the story of a daughter, Catherine, dealing with the death of her mentally ill, mathematical genius of a father, while struggling with her own sense of sanity. The play calls for four cast members: Catherine, Robert – Catherine's father who shows up periodically in flashbacks and her imagination, Hal – Robert's former graduate student, and Claire – Catherine's no-nonsense older sister.
Catherine - a genius herself who dropped out of school to tend to her father throughout his lengthy mental illness, now fears that she is following in her father's footsteps both mathematically and mentally. When her father's former student Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert's office, Catherine finds herself in a fight to prove that she, in fact, wrote the proof.
