OWC Students Named to All Florida Academic Team

Three Okaloosa-Walton College students, Lyndsi Thomas and W. Kathy Melvin of Fort Walton Beach and Stephanie Rossman of Tallahassee, have been named to the state's All-Florida Academic Team and were recently honored at a ceremony in Tallahassee sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, a national college honor society.

Lyndsi Thomas was one of thirty students selected to the First Team All-State. At 17 years old, she is the youngest member of the All-Florida Academic Team. She is currently a 12th grade student at the OWC Collegiate High School and is enrolled in a full schedule of college classes with a 3.96 college grade point average. Thomas is also the president of the college's Student Government Association and is the only SGA president at a Florida college who is a high school student. Thomas is Valedictorian of her Collegiate High School class and a member of the college's dance team and college honor society.

Kathy Melvin and Stephanie Rossman were selected to the Second Team All-State.

Kathy Melvin embodies what the community college system is all about -- second chances. After having two children at an early age, she decided to go back to school in her early thirties to work toward her AA degree. She currently holds a 4.0 grade point average at OWC and teaches prekindergarten at the OWC Child Development and Education Center. She is a member of the college's Early Childhood Student Association, the PTK honor society and is involved in a variety of volunteer activities.

Stephanie Rossman is captain of the OWC softball team and holds a 3.92 GPA. Despite numerous knee problems and surgeries, she continues to set an example on-the- field through her solid pitching performance and off-the-field through her academic achievements and a variety of community activities and volunteer efforts.

In order to be selected to the All-Florida Academic Team, students must be nominated by their college as an outstanding student who possesses accomplishments in areas such as academics, community service, and extracurricular activities.
