What are the Goals and Objectives of The Nursing Program?
A. Educational Outcomes
Upon completion of the Northwest Florida State College Nursing Program, graduates will:
- Apply the nursing process to assist clients in diverse settings to meet health goals as evidenced by achieving scores at or above the national level on the ER achievement examinations.
- Use knowledge derived from the biophysical and psychosocial sciences in applying critical thinking in safe nursing practice as evidenced by (a) successfully completing the Holistic Nursing Care Plan and/or comprehensive concept map and (b) achieving the potential to pass the NCLEX-RN on the NUR 2241 final exit examination---a reliable, standardized, commercially prepared examination.
- Demonstrate the core competencies of the Associate Degree Nurse published by the National League for Nursing as evidenced by validation by the majority of graduates &/or employer respondents.
- Communicate therapeutically as a caring professional in interactions with clients, other health care professionals, peers and others as evidenced by achieving scores at or above the national level on the ERI & by achieving a satisfactory rating on the final clinical course summative evaluation report (NUR 2241L).
- Practice in a compassionate, caring and ethical- legal manner as evidenced by achieving a satisfactory evaluation in the nursing management course (NUR 2811L).
B. Program Outcomes
The Northwest Florida State College Nursing Program will demonstrate its ability to meet expressed program outcomes as evidenced by the following accomplishments:
- The students admitted to the nursing program will reflect the demographic profile of Northwest Florida State College students.
- At least 80% of students admitted to the nursing program will complete the program of study within six semesters.
- Employment rates of graduates will meet or exceed the required state employment rate.
- At least 90% of graduates will meet service area employer requirements for entry- level staff nurses as evidenced by the majority of employer respondents.
- At least 90% of employer respondents will express satisfaction with the graduates’ performance.
- Employers of graduates will express satisfaction with the graduates’ performance.
How Long Will it Take Me to Complete the Nursing Program?
The nursing program is designed to be completed within six terms. The schedule of classes will vary according to the needs of the student. See a college advisor for schedule planning.
When will I graduate from the College?
Graduation will be achieved only after all Associate of Science in Nursing (A.S.N.) degree requirements are met.
Commencement is held annually, at the end of Spring Term. Graduation is NOT automatic. The student must apply for graduation according to the deadlines that are published on the academic calendar. Please refer to college catalog.
Will I need a License to Practice Nursing?
Yes.
Graduates of the Northwest Florida State College Nursing Program receive an Associate of Science in Nursing Degree. They will become eligible to apply to write the licensing examination to become a Registered Nurse(RN).
Anyone with an arrest record with the exception of a traffic violation should contact the office of the Florida Board of Nursing to determine eligibility to write the licensure examination PRIOR to seeking admission to the nursing program.
What Happens If I Am Not Selected for the Nursing Program?
Eligible students who are not admitted will be placed on a waiting list in the order in which they were selected in the random lottery. The waiting list will expire on the first day of classes for the fall term. Students still seeking admission to the program must reapply in a subsequent term.
When Will I Know if I’ve Been Accepted to the Program?
Eligible applicants who are selected will be notified in writing during the month of June.
II. CONDITIONS OF ENROLLMENT
A. After admission to the program, but prior to enrollment in the first nursing course, students must also satisfy the following additional requirements
- Possess a valid CPR certificate at the “C” level of competency in CPR for the adult, the child, the newborn infant & use of the AED
- Submit documentation dated within past year verifying a medical and dental examination indicating health and immunization status (Note: Immunizations may be required)
- Submit documentation of a drug screen dated within 30 days of the nursing program orientation which verifies the absence of drugs
- Pass a criminal background check through the vendor selected by the nursing program
B. Students who fail to satisfy the requirements of Section II (A) above will not be permitted to enroll in the program (including graduate practical nurses who fail their NCLEX-PN)
C. Students who decline admission, fail to enroll, fail to attend or who fail to satisfy Section II (A) above and who still seek admission to the program must reapply for admission in a subsequent admission period
