Program Details

Mission Statement: The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Northwest Florida State College is to provide high quality didactic and clinical instruction in order to prepare students to work as competent medical laboratory technicians in all routine areas of the clinical laboratory. This program qualifies students to apply for a Medical Laboratory Technician License in the state of Florida and to take the national certification examinations (ASCP, AAB, and/or AMT). The program is committed to producing competent, committed, ethical technicians to serve the community of Northwest Florida.

Career Outlook*

Employment needs are growing much faster than average for clinical laboratory workers and are expected to grow 11% from 2018 to 2028. Clinical laboratory technicians will be in demand to use and maintain equipment needed for diagnosis and treatment of growing serious medical conditions like cancer, type 2 diabetes, and other genetic conditions.

Typical salaries for the entry-level MLT begin at approximately $45,000 per year with the median annual wage for clinical laboratory technologists (Bachelor-level degree) and technicians (Associate-level degree) in our area being $49,200 in May 2018. A typical sign-on bonus in our area is approximately $10,000.

Physical Therapist Assistant

Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) work in a variety of treatment settings under the direction and supervision of physical therapists to provide skilled care to individuals of all ages who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their movement and performance of activities of daily living. Physical therapy is an essential element of patient care to promote the patient’s ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.

Overall employment of PTAs is expected to grow much faster than average as the demand for physical therapy is expected to increase in response to the needs of an older population and individuals with chronic conditions.
