Career and Technical Certificate

The Transportation Technician Level III certificate program provides the training leading to employment as transit technicians, heavy duty diesel truck technicians, train existing employees to become Federal Transportation Motor Carrier (FTMC) certified transit technicians, and to prepare existing technicians for the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) series of Transit Bus or Heavy Truck tests. This program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Transit Technician field.

The content includes but is not limited to the following: maintaining and repairing diesel engines, maintaining and repairing transmission and cooling systems, maintaining and repairing digital multiplex electrical systems, overhauling diesel engines and bus transmissions, maintaining and repairing heavy duty (10 ton) A/C systems and components, maintaining and repairing alternative fuel vehicles and components, and troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electronic computer controls and sensors and advanced electrical systems. The course content will also include training in communication, transit safety awareness, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), employability skills, and safe efficient work practices.

The Transit Technician program is a vocational credit (clock hour) program that is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of three programs or levels. The required sequence allows students to complete levels for employment or to remain for advanced training. Transit technician Level I is a prerequisites for Transit Technician Level II, and Transit Technician Level II is a prerequisite for Transit Level III. Students must demonstrate proficiency in the preceding level prior to advancement to the next higher level.
