Northwest Florida State College is celebrating significant legislative support in the Florida’s new state budget which took effect July 1, including an additional $5 million for a new College Workforce Innovation Center and $1.5 million to expand hospitality education at the South Walton Center.
The additional $5 million for the Workforce Innovation Center builds on last year’s $5 million state investment, bringing the total state appropriation for the project to $10 million. Together, these investments represent a major step forward in NWFSC’s efforts to expand high-demand workforce training, strengthen career and technical education, and better serve the needs of students and employers across Northwest Florida.
“We are deeply grateful to Governor Ron DeSantis, the Florida Legislature, and our local legislative delegation for their continued investment in Northwest Florida State College,” said NWFSC President Mel Ponder. “This funding is not simply an investment in facilities or programs. It is an investment in people — students preparing for meaningful careers, employers seeking skilled talent, and families building stronger futures right here in Northwest Florida.”
The Workforce Innovation Center will allow NWFSC to expand capacity for hands-on, workforce-aligned education in high-demand fields. Once complete, the center will support programs that prepare students for careers in industries critical to the region’s growth, while giving local employers a stronger pipeline of trained, job-ready talent.
“For our students, this means greater access to career-focused education and clearer pathways to well-paying jobs,” Ponder said. “For our employers, it means a College that can respond more quickly to changing workforce needs. And for our local economy, it means a long-term investment in the industries and businesses that depend on a skilled workforce to grow and compete.”
In addition to the Workforce Innovation Center funding, the state budget includes $1.5 million to expand hospitality education to NWFSC’s South Walton Center.
Hospitality and tourism are essential to the South Walton economy, and the region’s continued success depends on a workforce equipped with the skills, professionalism, and leadership needed to support world-class visitor experiences and a thriving local business community.
This investment will help the College build stronger hospitality training opportunities close to where the workforce is needed most. It will also create new pathways for students interested in careers in hospitality, tourism, culinary operations, event management, and related fields, while supporting employers in identifying and developing local talent.
NWFSC Board of Trustees Chair Rhea Goff said the investments reflect the important role the College plays in the region’s future.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are incredibly grateful for this continued investment at Northwest Florida State College,” Goff said. “This funding reflects the confidence our state leaders have in the College’s ability to prepare students for meaningful careers, support regional employers, and drive economic growth across Northwest Florida. These projects will have a lasting impact on our students, our workforce, and the communities we serve.”
The investments also align directly with the College’s new 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, which focuses on student experience, economic impact, employee excellence, community connection, and resource stewardship. Through both projects, NWFSC is continuing to align education with opportunity while strengthening its role as a workforce and economic development partner for Northwest Florida.
NWFSC extends its sincere appreciation to Governor Ron DeSantis for signing a budget that recognizes the importance of workforce education and economic development across Northwest Florida. The College is especially grateful to Senator Jay Trumbull, Senator Don Gaetz, Representative Patt Maney, Representative Shane Abbott, and Representative Nathan Boyles for their leadership, advocacy, and continued belief in Northwest Florida State College.
“Their partnership helps ensure Northwest Florida has a strong voice in Tallahassee,” Ponder said. “Because of their support, Northwest Florida State College is better positioned to serve students, support employers, and strengthen the communities we are honored to serve.”
